St. Edmund opens district with sweep
NEW ROADS – St. Edmund dominated the first half as the Lady Jays cruised to a 53-35 win over False River Academy Friday in the District 5-1A opener for both teams.
St. Edmund (5-11, 1-0) jumped out to a 14-9 first quarter lead, led by four points from both Sydney Thibodeaux and Abby Miller.
Maggie Larriviere scored three points and Victoria McGee added two more points for the Lady Jays.
St. Edmund exploded for a 20-8 run in the second quarter as the Lady Jays pushed ahead, 34-17 at the break.
Camille Leger led the Lady Jays with nine points in the period, while Miller and Larriviere each chipped in four points.
The two defenses battled in the third period as the Lady Jays outscored the Lady Gators 7-5.
Miller pushed in four points for the Lady Jays, while Gabby Fontenot added a bucket and Leger hit a free throw.
False River (2-10, 0-1) outscored the Lady Jays 13-12 in the fourth quarter.
McGee scored six points to spark St. Edmund as Miller added four more points and Fontenot chipped in two more points.
Miller finished with 16 points for St. Edmund, while Leger contributed 10 points.
Larriviere and McGee both finished with eight points, whole Fontenot chipped in six points.
Thibodeaux led the Lady Jays with 10 rebounds and six steals.
Leger had five steals, three blocked shots and three forced turnovers.
Larriviere finished with six rebounds and three steals.
Fontenot added five rebounds, two steals and a forced turnover for the Lady Jays.
Kate Brooks led False River with 14 points.
St. Edmund remains on the road this week with games at Catholic High of Pointe Coupee on Tuesday and at Westminster Christian Academy on Friday.

NEW ROADS – The St. Edmund Blue Jays opened District 5-1A action here Friday night with a 53-25 victory over the False River High Gators.
The Blue Jays took control of the contest in the first quarter, jumping out to a 15-8 advantage with John Ross Guillory leading the offense with nine points. Cullen Brown chipped in with four points for the Jays.
The Blue Jays continued their domination in the second quarter, outscoring the Gators by a 17-6 margin to a claim a 32-14 lead at halftime.
Austin Gradnay led the way in scoring in the second quarter with nine points, with five coming at the free-throw line. Guillory and Brown continued to be effective as well with four points apiece.
Playing with great confidence in the third quarter, the Jays extended their lead to 45-18 heading into the final eight minutes. Guillory led the way with nine points, with Brown adding four.
Brown added eight more points in the final quarter as the Blue Jays would hold an 8-7 advantage.
Guillory would finish the game with 22 points, which included two field goals from beyond the 3-point arc. Brown ended the game with 20 points. Gradnay had nine and Dylan Beiber had two to complete the St. Edmund scoring.
Damien Johnson topped the Gators in scoring with 12 points. Will Montgomery and Brandon Chenevert scored four points apiece.
The Blue Jays will attempt to go 2-0 in district play on Tuesday when they travel to face Catholic High of Pointe Coupee.
