St. Edmund splits with Westminster

The Lady Jays moved closer to a playoff berth with 46-31 win over Westminster Christian Academy Tuesday night.
No. 29 St. Edmund (10-13 overall, 6-2 in District 5-1A) now faces top-ranked North Central (21-2, 8-0) Friday in a key district showdown.
The Lady Jays jumped out to a 13-4 first quarter lead, sparked by seven points from Victoria McGee
The Lady Crusaders (7-17,2-6) battled for a 9-7 second quarter advantage to close the halftime gap to 20-13.
Free throws from Allison LaFleur and Camille Leger pushed the Lady Jays ahead, 17-6 with 3:28 left in the half.
WCA’s Christian Terry drained back-to-back three pointers to help the Lady Crusaders sneak back into the contest, 17-12.
Abby Brown scored on an in-bounds play for the Lady Jays and Leger later added another free throw as St. Edmund held onto a seven-point lead at the break.
WCA began the second half with a put-back by Eugenia Williams and a trey from Terry to close the gap to 20-18.
But the Lady Jays responded with a 11-2 run, sparked by five points from McGee, a lay-up by Gabby Fontenot, two free throws by Elissa David and a put-back bucket by Abby Miller.
St. Edmund took a 31-20 advantage into the fourth quarter as the Lady Jays moved closer to their quest of the post-season.
Terry nailed another three-pointer for WCA in the opening seconds of the quarter, but the Lady Jays answered with a 8-0 run to push ahead, 39-23.
Fontenot scored twice, while McGee hit her third trey of the contest and Miller added a free throw.
A trey from Maja Lazard and a drive in the lane by Kennedy Brown helped the Lady Crusaders close the gap to 40-0 midway through the quarter,
The Lady Jays sealed the win with a 6-1 run, including two points each from Fontenot, Leger and Miller.
McGee led St. Edmund with 15 points, while Fontenot added 10 points.
Terry led the Lady Crusaders with 12 points.

WCA 72, SEH 43
Westminster exploded for a 19-2 first quarter run as the Crusaders cruised to a 72-43 win over the Blue Jays.
Corey Pellerin scored 10 points for the Crusaders in the period, while Cullen Brown’s two free throws early in the quarter were the only Blue Jays points.
WCA began the second period with a 12-5 surge, aided by eight points from Trey Firmin.
A drive from St. Ed’s Brown and a three-pointer by Alex Dupre closed the gap to 25-8, but WCA increased its lead to 31-8 before Blue Jay senior Dylan Bieber hit two free throws.
Brown later drained three-pointer in the final seconds, but Devin Briley drove the lane right before the buzzer to give WCA a 40-15 advantage at the break.
The two offenses picked up the pace in the third quarter as WCA outscored St. Edmund, 21-17.
Firmin scored five early points for the Crusaders, while Brown had three points and Bieber scored inside for the Jays.
Kalien Thibodeaux pushed in three points and Firmin added four more points to extend WCA’s lead to 59-25 with 2:22 left in the period.
Guillory drilled a trey and then scored two free throws, while Austin Gradney hit a late lay-up as the Jays closed the gap to 61-32.
The two teams battled to an 11-11 tie in the fourth quarter.
WCA increased its lead to 71-32, sparked by seven points from Thibodeaux.
The Blue Jays responded with an 11-1 run to end the game.
Evan Dupuis and Christian Fontenot scored inside, while Lance Miller hit a three-pointer in final seconds for the Jays.
Brown led St. Edmund (3-23, 3-5) with 11 points, while Guillory chipped in eight points.
Firmin led WCA (13-7, 6-2) with 26 points and Pellerin contributed 17 points.
St. Edmund plays its final home game Friday against North Central (11-13, 8-0) before a road trip to Basile next Thursday.
