Trojans win battle over Blue Jays

VILLE PLATTE – It was Senior Night at Sacred Heart of Ville Platte, but the Lady Jays almost spoiled the celebration.
Trailing by 14 points heading into the fourth quarter, the St. Edmund Lady Jays went on a 14-2 run in the game’s final three minutes to make it close.
Lady Jay seniors Payton Crowell and Jami LeBouef both drained treys in the closing minutes but Sacred Heart held on for a 45-41 win.
The Lady Jays opened with a 8-5 run, mostly at the free throw line in the first period before the Lady Trojans responded with a 15-5 surge in the second quarter to grab a 20-13 halftime advantage.
Treys from LeBouef (six points) and Crowell (11 points) helped the Lady Jays close the gap to 37-23 as the game moved to the final quarter and the St. Edmund comeback attempt.
Allison Lafleur led the Lady Jays with 14 points.
Kara Aguillard led Sacred Heart with 13 points.
The Lady Trojans (13-11, 6-2) finished second in District 5-1A behind North Central, while St Emund finished the season 2-19 overall, 2-5 in district play.

Sacred Heart exploded for a 19-5 run to open the game as the Trojans cruised to a 65-27 win over rival St. Edmund.
Sean Fontenot and Conner Fontenot had the aim from long distance for the Trojans, while Wacen Fontenot’s trey off the glass at the buzzer excited the home crowd.
Austin Gradney’s trey and a put back by Cullen Brown accounted for the Blue Jays’ first-quarter points.
Sean Fontenot scored six more points in the second period, while senior Drew Brown’s trey in the closing seconds was the Blue Jays’ highlight bucket of the quarter.
Sacred Heart continued its offensive surge in the third period, sparked by two trey from Sean Fontenot and another from Gabe Fontenot.
Cullen Brown hit a jumper at the 4:47 mark for the Jays’ first points of the second half.
Brown added a put-back in the final seconds to close the gap to 40-16 as the game moved to the fourth quarter.
St. Edmund’s Drew Brown scored off a steal and Jacob Thibodeaux added two inside buckets as the Blue jays fought to make a comeback.
Cullen Brown scored on a second-chance bucket in the final seconds to close the margin to 38 points.
Drew Brown and Cullen Brown both finished with eight points, while Sean Fontenot’s 24 points led all scorers.
Sacred Heart-VP (10-11, 7-1) finished with North Central (12-12, 7-1) for a share of the District 5-1A title.
St. Edmund closed the season at 2-20 overall and 0-8 in district play.
