Wolves clip Bobcats
RAYNE – The Rayne Wolves rallied in the late innings to slip past the Eunice Bobcats by a 7-6 margin in Acadiana Metro action here Wednesday evening.
Eunice jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Gunner Fontenot reached on an error and moved to third when Logan Manuel’s bunt was misplayed for an error.
After Jordan Comeaux drew a walk, A. P. Sonnier drove home the run with a sacrifice fly.
The Cats increased their lead to 5-0 with four runs in the fourth.
With one out, Alec Trosclair was hit by a pitch and Hayden West reached on an error, moving Trosclair to third base from where he scored on a wild pitch.
Fontenot singled to put runners at first and third and Manuel drew a walk to load the bases. Comeaux drew a walk to force in a run and Sonnier drove in another with a sacrifice fly.
The final run scored as Caleb Taylor reached safely on an error.
Eunice starting pitcher Christian Lejeune tossed two scoreless innings to start the game and Manuel pitched a scoreless third before running into difficulty in the bottom of the fourth.
Jacob Hebert’s two-run single highlighted a three-run inning for the Wolves to cut the Bobcat lead to 5-3.
After the Cats failed to score in the fifth, the Wolves managed two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game against Comeaux, who relieved Manuel to open the inning.
Hunter Keely singled and Grant Abshire was hit by a pitch to open the inning.
A costly error on a bunt led to both runners crossing the plate to tie the game at 5-5.
Eunice’s Lejeune, playing center field limited the damage when he made a diving catch for the third, stranding two runners.
The Bobcats regained the lead in the sixth inning.
Fontenot singled and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Manuel. Sonnier drove in his third run of the game with double down the left field line for a 6-5 lead.
Sonnier reached third base on a wild pitch but was left stranded as the side was retired.
The Wolves opened bottom of the sixth with a single, then got a another runner on base as a result of an error.
Keely’s ground-out drove in one run and another scored on a double by Abshire to put the Wolves up 7-6.
The Cats got the tying run on base in the seventh when Logan Dischler was hit by a pitch, but the game ended when Lejuene’s line drive was caught at second base and Dischler was doubled up as he dove back to first base.
The Bobcats will be at home this week with games against Mamou and Sacred Heart of Ville Platte on Monday and Wednesday.
