Youth leads Lady Jays

By Tom Dodge

With three seniors, the St. Edmund Lady Jays will depend on their leadership and the contributions of younger players this season.
Senior first baseman Jami LeBouef, shortstop Baylee Lafleur and rightfielder Heather Bieber lead the way, according to head coach Thomas David.
“The three are all good softball players,” the coach said. “They do a good job as leaders and they also produce on the field.”
The pitching staff is led by junior Kasey Lafleur along with freshmen Maggie Larriviere, Madison Cormier and Gabby Fontenot.
“Kasey has the experience and hopefully we can relieve her at times with the other pitchers,” David said. “We have confidence in all our pitchers - they all have the ability.”
Fontenot will also play second, while Kelli Richard opened the season at third base.
Junior Heidi Bieber will play centerfield with junior Caroline Hunt. sophomore Allison LaFleur and freshman Elissa David rotating at left field.
Juniors Caroline Hunt and Victoria McGee will also contribute.
Other sophomores are Mallory Allain, Ashton Eckholdt, Kylie Hebert, Kathyrn Leger, and Preslie Vidrine.
Other freshmen are Vivian Dubois, Anna Duplechin, Camille Leger, Olivia McDaniel, Abby Miller and Brooke Young.
“All the girls will have to battle to keep their jobs because we have a pretty competitive situation,” David said.
“We want them to be challenged - you have to produce to stay on the grass.”
David said it is a very tough district and a long season.
“Hopefully we are a better ball club by the time we get to district,” he said. “We have a good team but there are things we need to do to improve.
“We play to battle for the district title.”
