Lady Bengals set new win streak record

The LSU Eunice softball team swept visiting San Jacinto Community College on Saturday afternoon, using solid pitching and timely hitting to push their winning streak to a new program-best of 28 consecutive games.
The winning streak eclipses the program’s previous high of 27 games set last season, from March 15 to May 10, 2013.
“It was really good competition today. We did some things really well today, we had some big hits at key times, but a lot of times when you play like that you are supposed to lose…somehow we pulled it out and won. We found a way to win,” head coach Andy Lee said.
The Lady Bengals (45-1) collected just seven hits and committed five errors in the first game, but saw Destin Vicknair allow only five hits and give up one unearned run while striking out five San Jacinto batters in the complete game win as she notched win No. 20 on the season.
At the plate, Taylor Boulet (double) and Vicknair (2 doubles) each finished 2-for-3, while Emily Nolan, Ashley Subervielle and Morgan Tauzin all collected one hit and Brooklynn Clark (0-2) added an RBI.
Tied going into the bottom of the third inning, Subervielle led off the frame with a single before scoring on Boulet’s RBI double. Clark’s sacrifice fly brought home the second run of the game before a San Jacinto throwing error allowed another run to score on the play.
The visitors used a hit and two LSU Eunice errors to score their lone run in the fourth, with the Lady Bengals choosing to pick up the out on an attempted double steal when San Jacinto had runners at first and third base.
The final run of the game came in the sixth when Nolan opened the inning with a single before Vicknair’s RBI double plated the run later in the frame.
In the second game, Katie Flowers finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI on her solo home run, while Codi Covington and Clark each collected two hits. Covington notched a double and a home run of her own, and Clark finished with a pair of doubles.
Vicknair tallied one hit, a two-run homer, while Dani Cruickshank and Raven Cole both added a single hit as well.
Cole earned her 20th win in the circle, allowing five hits and five runs while walking four batters and striking out five more in the complete game victory.
The Lady Bengals got the scoring started in the first inning on Clark’s RBI double and a two-run homer by Vicknair over the right field wall.
San Jacinto plated a run in the second inning on a wild pitch before LSU Eunice answered back in the fourth frame with Flowers’ solo home run.
After the visitors again cut into the lead with an RBI groundout in the top of the fifth, Covington’s solo homer to straight away center field brought the game to its final score.
The Lady Bengals are back in action next Saturday afternoon when they host Northeast Texas Community College in a doubleheader beginning at noon with the second game to follow.
