Boater charges with DWI in fatal accident

A Mansura man was arrested and charged with DWI in connection with the fatal accident of a passenger in his boat this past Sunday.
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division agents said David Crocket, 48, of Mansura died when he fell overboard on Little River, a stream int he Spring Bayou complex near Marksville. LDWF received a call of a single-vessel incident and a missing boater at about 6:30 p.m. Crocket’s body was found around 8 p.m. and turned over to the Avoyelles Parish Coroner’s Office.
Boat operator Marcus Logan Sr., 43, of Mansura told agents the boat was westbound on Little River when he had to swerve to avoid an object in the water. Crocket fell overboard, went under the water and never surfaced.
Agents said Crocket was not wearing a life-jacket.
Upon further investigation, the agents determined Logan was allegedly under the influence of alcohol while operating the vessel. He was arrested for driving a vessel while intoxicated (DWI) and also cited for careless operation of a vessel. He was taken to Avoyelles Detention Center #1. LDWF said additional charges may be pending.
Conviction of DWI carries a fine of between $300-$1000 fine, up to six months in jail and up to a year’s suspension of driver’s license and boating operation privileges. Careless operation of a vessel carries up to a $300 fine and 30 days in jail.
