Crowley man charged with crawfish theft
Crawfishermen have had enough problems this year with ups and downs in the weather without having to deal with a rash of thefts of their crop.
Acadia Parish Sheriff Wayne Melancon said his office has received numerous complaints of theft from crawfish farmers parishwide as the season builds toward its Good Friday high point.
Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries agents took some action on the matter this week, arresting a Crowley man accused of stealing crawfish from traps in an Acadia Parish pond.
Jason Paul Mire, 39, of the 2700 block of Crowley-Eunice Highway near Crowley, faces up to 10 years in prison at hard labor and a fine up to $3,000, Melancon said.
Melancon said state wildlife agents saw Mire in a crawfish pond that does not belong to him. The arrest, aided by sheriff’s deputies, occurred at the site of the alleged thefts on Crowley-Eunice Highway near Mire’s home.
