State Police said Tuesday that the suspects in the murder of an off-duty Vermilion Parish deputy Monday afternoon happened just after the suspected killers alleged committed a house burglary.
Two men are being held in connection with the shooting death Monday afternoon of off-duty Vermilion Sheriff's deputy Allen Bares, Jr., 51, of Erath.
Bares leaves behind a wife and two children, all of Abbeville.
Bares called the sheriff's office about 4 p.m. to report suspicious activity south of the city, where he was cutting grass. He identified himself to his alleged killers before making the call, trooper said.
The suspects have been identified as 20-year-old Quintylan Richard and 19-year-old Baylon Taylor. Richard is the alleged the shooter. He was found at a Kaplan apartment complex.
They allegedly fled the murder scene in Bares' pickup, after apparently earlier running their ride into a ditch.
Both men were charged with first-degree murder. They were arrested about 12:15 a.m. Tuesday.
Bares was a 12-year law enforcement officer.
Information regarding any prior police record of the accused murderers was not available.
