Holly Beach scene of upcoming dune restoration project

The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana and CITGO Petroleum Corporation will host a dune restoration event at Holly Beach from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20.
Volunteers will plant a five mile stretch of newly constructed beach with 70,000 plugs of dune grass. This will be the largest volunteer-based restoration project in that area of the state. The goal of the project is to increase soil retention along the newly constructed beach, promote dune growth, provide critical habitat for nesting birds and enhance protection to the coastal communities of Cameron Parish.
Volunteers must be at least 7 years of age and must be accompanied by an adult. Planting along the beach is a strenuous activity, so physical fitness is necessary. All equipment -- dibbles, gloves, etc -- and lunch and drinks, with vegetarian options, will be provided to all volunteers.
Volunteers may take a shuttle bus to the area, and the buses will be waiting at CITGO Park in Sulphur. Those who live south of Sulphur are not expected to ride the shuttle.
All volunteers must register, and to register, visit www.thedatabank.com/dpg/316/personal2.asp?formid=event&c=937243. If the event registration is full, there will be a waiting list. If unable to attend, notify CRCL as soon as possible. Groups are also welcome to attend the event.
