Kaplan man charged in fatal hit-and-run
Following an extensive investigation, State Troopers have arrested a Kaplan mant for his part in a hit and run fatality crash that killed a bicyclist on LA 92 near Milton on July 7.
At approximately 11:40 p.m. Sunday, troopers arrested 42-year-old Fitzpatrick F. Doucette of Kaplan.
Troopers suspect that Doucette was driving a 1997 Lincoln passenger car that struck the bicyclist, Lon Lomas, and that he fled the scene after the crash.
A warrant was obtained for Doucette’s arrest through the 15th JDC charging him with Negligent Homicide, Felony Hit & Run, Driving under Suspension, and Limitations on Passing Bicycles. Doucette was placed under arrest and booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Facility on the above listed charges.
The crash happened on LA 92 at Mermentau Road east of Milton, killing Lon Lomas, 30 of Youngsville.
At 7:03 a.m., Troopers were notified of a white male and a bicycle in the south ditch of LA 92 at Mermentau Road. Preliminary investigation revealed Lomas was traveling east on LA 92 on a bicycle and was struck from behind by an unknown vehicle. The bicycle and Lomas came to rest in the south ditch of LA 92.
