Man posing as Homeland Security agent crashes wedding reception, leaves with the gifts

A Bunkie man posing as a Homeland Security agent became a serious wedding crasher when he allegedly stole all of the wedding gifts at a reception on May 31.
Police said the same man, William Girard Logan, had come to the Bunkie police station earlier that day, claiming to be a Homeland Security agent. Logan, 25, of 904 Beech Street in Bunkie was arrested a few hours later June 1. Bunkie police said they are not sure if all gifts have been recovered because the items were wrapped when taken. Police have not released the recovered items to the newlyweds because the items are considered part of an ongoing investigation.
Logan was charged with simple burglary, impersonating a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, obstruction of justice and theft. He was booked into Avoyelles Detention Center #1 in Marksville June 1 and released June 4 on a $60,000 bond. The wedding reception for Joel Taylor and Sara Moreau was being held at Haas Auditorium.
Moreau is the daughter of former Bunkie Mayor Gerard Moreau. There was a large crowd at the reception. During the reception, a man wearing a law enforcement shirt and pants entered and said he was with Homeland Security. The couple left for their honeymoon, but the party continued until around midnight. Family members were going to come back later in the morning to retrieve the wedding presents. Bunkie Fire Chief Joey Frank was locking up the building when he said he saw Logan taking the gifts and loading them into his car. Frank called Moreau to see if he had given Logan permission to remove the gifts. Moreau said no.
By that time, Logan had fled the scene. After a brief investigation by detectives Chad Jeansonne and Susie Lacassin, police found Logan’s vehicle at his address. Police said Logan would not answer the door, and they could not enter the house without a warrant. They received the warrant at about 3 a.m. June 1 and had to forcefully gain entry into the home.
The house was searched, but no items were seized due to the fact that the stolen items were wrapped gifts and the package contents were unknown. June 2, police resumed searching the area for any stolen items. In a wooded area near Logan’s residence, searchers say they found wedding cards, gift wrapping and an empty knife box. Police say they also found other personalized items belonging to the bride and groom. Envelopes containing the cards had been torn open in an apparent search for money and gift cards.
After obtaining permission from another resident of the home, police recovered several items believed to be stolen because the other resident said they did not belong to her. The investigation continued and the following day another search was conducted in an attempt to locate other items. “I just hope that good things come out of this bad situation,” Gerard Moreau said. “Hopefully, this will save someone else from having the same disappointment.” Police Chief Mary Fanara said the situation started before the reception when Logan came to the Bunkie Police Department and identified himself as a Homeland Security agent. Fanara said Logan was wearing khaki pants and “a dark blue shirt that had the word ‘Agent’ printed on the back, with a Homeland Security emblem on the front.”
She said he told police he was part of the Federal Fugitive Team responsible for capturing wanted criminals. “His accurate knowledge of law enforcement, in addition to his appearance and clothing, was convincing that he was employed by Homeland Security,” Fanara said. Logan said he wanted to introduce himself to local law enforcement officers in the event he needed any assistance in the future, she said. Homeland Security was notified and confirmed that Logan was not and never had been employed by their office nor ever been affiliated with HSA in any manner.
