Experience leads Lady Cats softball

The Eunice High Lady Bobcat softball team has a goal of making it to the Class 4A playoffs in 2015.
Head coach John McLemore and assistant coach Therese Gianfala lost four starters to graduation from last season when the Lady Cats posted an overall record of 8-16.
“Losing four seniors doesn’t sound like a lot, but they were the core of the team and filling those spots in the lineup is not easy,” commented Coach McLemore.
Helping the situation is the return of two experienced starters.
Junior Mia Lejeune, who led the team in home runs last season, returns for her third year at the catcher position.
Senior Logan Ledoux also returns for her third year as the starter at first base.
“Both of these girls are leaders both on and off the field,” said McLemore.
Ledoux could move to the outfield if needed, said the head coach.
Senior center fielder Ryan Citizen is fighting a shoulder issue which may result in Citizen and Ledoux swapping positions if Citizen’s problems continue.
Sophomore Destiny Edwards will take over as the new starter at second base, replacing the graduated Kaliee Lyons.
Junior Darian Fontenot will take over as a first-year starter at third base.
There is competition for the starting job at shortstop. Junior Dashaya Vigers, sophomore Bailey Vidrine, and freshman Amber Arvie are involved in the competition, according to McLemore.
The coaches are hopeful that junior Kelci Huval will return as starter in the outfield. Arm problems hampered her playing time last season.
Senior Heidi Pitre and freshman Morgan Domingue will be joined by either Citizen or Ledoux as potential starters.
The most experienced pitcher for the Lady Cats is Peyton Winn, a junior. Sophomore Jadey Miller and freshman Arive and Domingue round out the staff.
Other upperclassmen on the team include senior Amalfi Watley and junior Trinity Hedgecoth.
The Lady Cats finished 6-6 in district last season and are hoping to improve on that record this season. The district includes Beau Chene, Crowley, LaGrange, Opelousas High, and Washington-Marion.
Eunice will open the season in the St. Landry Parish jamboree to be held at Beau Chene next weekend.
The Lady Cats will face Opelousas Catholic at 7 p.m. on Friday before taking on the Port Barre Lady Devils at noon on Saturday.
