WCA clips Lady Jays

Both teams were searching for their first District 6-1A win on Tuesday when Westminster Christian Acadmey faced St. Edmund at Lady Jay Field.

WCA (11-8, 1-2) scored four runs in the top of the third inning to seal a 6-1 win over the Lady Jays (3-12, 0-3).

The Lady Jays’ offensive highlight was a solo home run by Olivia LaFleur in the bottom of the sixth inning, her second home run in consecutive home games.

The Lady Crusaders jumped out to a 1-0 lead when lead-off hitter Caeli Comb walked and later scored on a passed ball.

St. Edmund threatened in the bottom of the first when Jada Fontenot walked but was left stranded.

The Lady Jays threatened again in the bottom of the second when Heather Bieber singled to centerfield, but a double play erased their scoring opportunity.

WCA then pushed ahead 5-0 in the top of the third, begun when Morgan Dennis walked and scored on a wild pitch.

Jade Fontenot followed with a single, Taylor Leger walked and Gabby Lewis reached on an error to load the bases.

Ashlin Naquin then cleared the bases with a double to left field.

Lady Jay Maddie Andrus was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the third, but was left standing at second.

WCA added a run in the top of the fourth when Dennis walked and scored when Lewis reached on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice.

St. Edmund threatened again in the bottom of the fifth when Heidi Bieber singled to left, but she could not score.

After LaFleur’s solo shot in the sixth inning, the Lady Jays last scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the seventh when Katie Richard walked with two outs, but she could not advance.

St. Edmund visits district rival Sacred Heart of Ville Platte at 4:30 p.m. today before entertaining Opelousas Catholic at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
