Eunice father charged with shaking baby, causing injury (updated)

The father of a 4-month-old boy is charged with shaking the infant causing bleeding on the brain and from the eyes, a news release from the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office stated.
The incident occurred in the Eunice area, Lt. Clay Higgins, public information officer, stated in an email
Matthew Marcantel, 22, no address given, is charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and being held on $40,000 bail pending trial, Higgins stated.
The infant was taken to Woman’s and Children’s Hospital in Lafayette for intensive care on March 14.
Higgins did not state where the incident occurred.
A neurosurgeon said the baby showed signs of “shaken baby syndrome,” Higgins said.
The doctor stated the bleeding on the brain coincided with bleeding in the eyes, Higgins stated.
Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said, “Our hopes and prayers go out to this small child and his entire family. This is not a time for judgement, it is a time for respectful concern and empathy. Matthew Marcantel was charged appropriately according to the evidence disclosed through a careful investigation. He will have his day in court. For now, our primary concern is for the infant.”
