Louisiana State Police: Unrestrained Elton woman killed in crash this morning

A two-vehicle on Interstate 10 wet of Iota near milepost 68 at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday took claimed the life of Emily Tramel, 29, of Elton, a Louisiana Police State news release stated.
Police said the crash occurred as Tramel was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Impala westbound on Interstate 10 in the left lane.  While traveling west, Tramel’s vehicle struck a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Stephany St. Cyr, 20, of Harvey, from behind, police said.
After impact, Tramel ran off of the right side of the roadway and struck some trees, police  Tramel was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead on scene by a Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office representative, police said.
Police said St.Cyr was able to bring her vehicle to a controlled stop on the shoulder of the Interstate.  St.Cyr, who was wearing a seat belt sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital by Acadian Ambulance, the news release stated.
It is unknown if impairment is a factor in the crash, police said.  Toxicology samples were taken from Tramel and St.Cyr and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
In the news release, troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained.                       
This was the 25th fatal crash and the 26th fatality investigated by Troop I this year, police said.
