Bears advance to quarterfinals

DONALDSONVILLE – Kian Richard drilled a 38-yard field goal with three seconds left to lift No. 9 Church Point to a 33-30 win over No. 25 Donaldsonville in the regional round of the Class 3-A playoffs.
It is the first time in school history for the Bears to advance to the state football quarterfinals.
Church Point (9-3) will entertain top-seed Livonia, 43-12 winners over Northwest.
Livonia (12-0) defeated Church Point 40-9 in the regular season finale.
The Bears jumped out to a 6-0 lead with an 8-yard run by Deion Monroe but the extra point was blocked.
Donaldsonville (5-7) took an 8-6 lead when James Leondre grabbed a 9-yard pass from Tyler Brown and the two-point conversion was good.
DHS pushed ahead 14-6 in the second period on a 39-yard pass from Brown to Leondre with 6:36 left before the break.
The Bears answered with a 31-yard field goal by Richard with 45 seconds left in the half to close the gap to 14-9.
Donaldsonville scored with four seconds left before intermission when Leondre caught a 29-yard pass from Brown.
The two-point conversion pass gave the Tigers a 22-9 advantage at the half.
Church Point quarterback Jake Morvant connected with Frederick Williams for a 52-yard scoring strike early in the third period and Richard’s PAT closed the gap to 22-16.
Donaldsonville answered with a 16-yard pass from Brown to Stephen Sullivan. The two-point conversion pass pushed the Tigers ahead, 30-16.
Church Point then went on a 17-0 run in the fourth period to rally for the win.
James Bellard scored on a 4-yard run at the 11:55 mark as the Bears puled closer, 30-23.
Morvant tied the game with a 1-yard run with 8:26 left and Richard hit his third PAT in a row and set up his final second heroics.
Monroe finished with 112 yards on 21 carries, while Bellard added 75 yards on 11 carries. Trevor Breaux had four carries for 35 yards.
Morvant completed 5-of-7 passes for 112 yards.
Brown completed 22-of-31 passes for 304 yards for the Tigers.
Leondre finished with 10 catches for 179 yards, while Jacquel Gant had 10 catches for 121 yards.
