Blue Jays fall in doubleheader

The battle for the District 5-1A title took a major step Thursday as Catholic High of Pointe Coupee swept St. Edmund 4-3, 14-2 in a doubleheader at Blue Jay Field.
Heading into the final week of district play, CHPC (13-9, 5-1) and Westminster Christian Academy (15-9, 5-1) will square off Wednesday for the district title.
SEH (11-13, 3-3) concludes district at False River Academy Tuesday before facing WCA Thursday for Senior Day.
The Blue Jays travel to Eunice High Friday for the regular season finale.
St. Edmund scored two runs in the first inning, begun when Drake Brunet walked and Gibson LaFleur singled and both crossed home plate on double by Jack Brown.
The Jays later added a run in the third inning when LaFleur doubled and scored on a hit by Dawson Ardoin.
Catholic closed the gap to 3-2 in the top of the sixth before scoring twice in the seventh to grab the win.
The Hornets had 10 hits, 14 walks and left eight on base, while the Jays finished with five hits and stranded seven baserunners.
In the finale, Catholic jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of ths second inning, begun when Cameron Peairs walked and scored on a hit by Kyle Ramagos.
St. Edmund grabbed its only lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning, begun when Brock Bieber singled and scored as Dawson Ardoin reached on an error.
The Jays moved ahead when Jack Miller singled in Ardoin, but the Hornets quickly responded with a 10-run scoring barrage in the third inning before sealing the mercy-rule win with three more runs in the fifth frame.
Catholic had 11 hits and left 12 on base.
Cole Bergeron went 2-for-3 as the Jays rapped seven hits and left six on base in the loss.

SEH 2, WCA 1
The Blue Jays grabbed a crucial district win Tuesday as St. Edmund earned a 2-1 victory over Westminster for the Crusaders’ first district loss of the season.
WCA scored in the first inning when Jonah Manuel walked and later crossed home after Shelby Myers flied out.
St. Edmund tied the game in the bottom of the inning when William Chachere walked and scored on Gibson LaFleur’s single to left field.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning when Drake Brunet reached on a fielder’s choice and scored when LaFleur grounded out to first base.
LaFleur earned the win as he struck out three, walked three and allowed one run on two hits.
Brunet sealed the win in the seventh as he struck out one, walked one and allowed one hit.
LaFleur helped his own cause as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Brunet (1-for-3) and Chachere (1-for-2, walk) grabbed the other two Blue Jay hits.
