Bobcats maul Panthers, 54-6

By John Burson

The Eunice High Bobcats closed out their regular season Friday night at Bobcat Stadium with a 54-6 District 5-3A victory over the Pine Prairie Panthers.
The No. 18 Bobcats now await the release of the 3-A state brackets today to see their playoff positioning.
Coach Paul Trosclair’s Bobcats kicked off to begin the game against Pine Prairie and it looked as if the Panthers would be competitive as they drove from their own 41 to the Bobcats’ 18.
But the drive ended when Panther quarterback BJ Ardoin fumbled and Lukas Deculus recovered for the Cats.
The Cats wasted no time in getting their offense in gear. After a six-yard run by Zack Joubert, quarterback Jaden Brasseaux went to the air with 15-yard completions to Dashawn Vigers and Avery Lee.
Lee then ran for nine yards before Brasseaux connected with Vigers on a 29-yard completion.
Two plays later, Trevin Ceasar scored on a six-yard run to cap the 80-yard drvie. Austin Phillips kicked the PAT to give the Cats a 7-0 lead with 3:55 left in the first quarter.
The Panthers tried to respond, picking up a couple of first downs as they moved to Eunice 33-yard line.
But the Panthers failed to convert a fourth-and-13 at the 38 when Ardoin was sacked by Tyler Darbonne.
Brasseaux went to the air on first down, hitting Vigers for five yards before teaming with Lee on a 21-yard pass play. Georrein Dupre capped the scoring drive with a 16-yard run and Phillips kicked the PAT to put the Cats on top 14-0 with 10:17 left in the first half.
After each team lost a fumble and the Panthers punted to pin the Cats at their own 30, Lee broke free up the middle and outran everyone to score on a 70-yard run with 6:26 left in the half.
After forcing a punt from the Panthers, Brasseaux went back to the air on first down, finding Jordan Ledet down the left sideline for a 57-yard touchdown play and a 28-0 lead following Phillips’ PAT kick.
The Cats would add another touchdown with 1:05 left in the half on a 35-yard run by Dupre. The PAT kick by Phillips gave the Cats a 35-0 lead at the half.
The second half started with Lee returning the kickoff 32 yards to near midfield. Staying on the ground, the Cats drove 51 yards in seven plays for a touchdown.
A 16-yard run by Austin Deculus highlighted the drive which was capped on Jay Pitre’s touchdown run. Harold Fontenot kicked the PAT to put the Cats on top by a 42-0 margin.
A blocked punt by Eunice’s Parker Jodon set up the next Bobcat touchdown. This time it was Bailey Richardson who ran four yards for the score.
Traelyn Brasseaux completed his first pass of the year to James Williams to set up the touchdown as the third quarter ended.
The Panthers would get on the scoreboard with a 55-yard drive that was capped by Ahmad Fontenot’s 11-yard touchdown run. The PAT failed and the score remained 48-6 with 6:16 left in the game.
Richardson would add his second touchdown of the night for the Cats with 4:39 remaining as he raced 37 yards for a touchdown to make it a 54-6 final score.
The Bobcats finished the game with spectacular offensive numbers.
Jaden Brasseaux completed seven of seven passes for 203 yards, with Vigers catching three for 49 yards.
Avery Lee ran six times for 122 yards and caught two passes for 36 yards to account for 158 yards of offense.
Bobcat rushers carried 23 times for 291 yards as the Cats went over the 500-yard mark for the game.
