Eunice splits with W-Marion

The Eunice High Lady Bobcats used a strong second quarter on the way to propel themselves to a 40-33 victory over the Washington-Marion High Lady Indians in District 4-4A basketball action Monday night at the Eunice High gym.
Coach Durell Peloquin’s Lady Cats improved their season record to 14-7 and their district record to 5-4 with the victory. The Lady Indians fell to 3-5 in district play.
The Lady Bobcats managed a 9-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but used a 12-5 advantage in the second quarter to hold a 21-12 halftime lead. Hali Jack led the Lady Cats with eight points to spark her team’s surge. Jack sank two 3-point field goals and one two-point goal in the quarter.
Washington-Marion managed to cut the lead to five points during the third quarter behind Ashley Cherry’s eight points. The Lady Indians outscored the Lady Cats 10-6 to cut the Eunice lead to 27-22 heading into the final quarter of play.
Two free throws by Jack in the first minute of the fourth quarter put the Lady Cats on top 29-22. The Lady Cats’ Dashaya Vigers added a three-point play when she was fouled as she made a driving goal, then sank the free throw to increase the lead to 32-22 with 5:14 left in the game.
A field goal by Cherry cut the lead to eight, but a free throw by Kate McLemore made it 33-24 at the four-minute mark. Cherry’s field goal at the 2:52 mark cut the Eunice lead to 33-28, but that was the closest the Lady Indians got as Ashley Washington two free throws and a driving field goal by Vigers sealed the win.
Vigers led the Lady Bobcats in scoring with 13 points. Jack and Washington added 10 points apiece, while Beulah Bradley and McLemore scored four and three points respectively to complete the scoring.
Cherry topped Washington-Marion in scoring with 24 points, Nylah Vital and Yahaira Reed completed the team scoring with five and four.
The Lady Cats continue district play on Friday when they travel to face LaGrange High in Lake Charles.

W-M 84, EHS 53
The Eunice High Bobcats made it interesting for a half, but the Washington-Marion Chargin’ Indians gradually pulled away to post an 84-53 victory in 4-4A basketball action Monday night at the Eunice High School gym.
Coach Chad Andrepont’s Bobcats stayed with the Indians basket for basket in the opening quarter, trailing 19-18 only due to a last second field goal by the Indians. The Indians put some distance between themselves and the Bobcats in the early going of the second quarter by scoring the first eight points, but the Cats in the game, trailing by a 40-28 margin at the half.
But the talented Chargin’ Indians, co-leaders in 4-4A with a 7-1 record outscored the Cats 19-12 in the third quarter and 25-13 in the final quarter to pull away for the win. Washington-Marion improved to 17-3 for the season.
Mark Vital and Dionte Dixon topped the scoring for the Indians with 20 and 18 points, respectively. Also hitting the double-digit scoring mark for the Indians were Demond Dellahoussaye with 14 and Dedrick Richmond with 12.
Leading the Bobcats in scoring were Jerwaski Thomas with 12 points and Travis Godfrey with 11 points. Khaleel Deville added eight points, while Paul Hebert and Halen Jack added six apiece.
The Bobcats (7-17, 1-5) will continue 4-4A action on Friday when they travel to face the LaGrange Gators in Lake Charles.
