Leger retires from Highland Elementary
Brenda Leger officially retired as an educator with 18 years in May of this year.
Leger’s last and longest teaching post was at Highland Elementary where she taught special needs students. Prior to her longest haul of teaching years at Highland, Leger taught at Eunice Jr. High for three years. She was a first-grade teacher at Intercoastal City; a second and third-grade teacher at Eunice Elementary, and a fourth-grade teacher in Humble Texas.
Leger, herself, did not graduate high school with her fellow classmates. “Our family moved to Oberlin where I finished fifth grade. Then we moved to Eunice where I attended Highland Elementary. I did attend Eunice Jr. High, but only for a few weeks,” said Leger.
She had a desire to go back to school and receive a high school diploma. And that she did. “As a mother of five children, and they needed a role model for them, I went to night school in Basile. After three months, I earned a GED.”
Leger took the ACT exam and to her surprise scored well above entry level. “My only weakness was in math,”
Leger continued her education, as she went onto college. “I attended LSUE where I earned as associates degree in Arts.
Leger transferred and attended USL in Lafayette where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Education. She is certified to teach regular education (1st-8th grades) and also Special Education (1st - 12th grades).
Leger has been married to Ricky Leger Sr. for the past 41 years and is the mother of five children; and grandmother of 13.
She is currently the facilitator of her own homeschool, Academic Builders, where she teaches five elementary students. She added, “I could not stay away from teaching or loving little ones. I decided to open my homeschool, and loving it.”
