Essays Sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8971 & Ladies Auxiliary allows students to participate and are eligible to win scholarships.
There are five different essay opportunities available (typed essays, audio CDs essays, Continuing Education Scholarships, Junior Girls Scholarship Contest and Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest.
Below are details:
1. Voice Of Democracy — Theme: “Why Veterans Are Important To Our Nation’s History And Furture?” Eligibility: -Students enrolled in public, private, parochial, nondenominational or home-schooled students located in the United States, its territories and possessions, or in an overseas U.S. military/civilian dependent school in grades 9th — 12th.
Former first place state winners are not eligible to compete again. Exchange students and adults are not eligible. U.S. citizenship is required.
Requirements For Students: Record a 3-5 minute essay on a CD on the theme listed above with a typewritten essay. Make sure your CD is audible. ( Do not use reel to reel taps). Label your CD with your name. Hearing/speech impaired students should contact the Voice of Democracy National office at (816) 968-1117 for special instructions. Last step is to complete entry form and have a photo of yourself to submit for judging. Your deadline for submitting your entry form, photo of self, essay and audio CD will be Nov. 1. (no exceptions)
Winner: The National Organization awards approximately $2.1 million in Scholarships yearly, with the first place winner receiving a $30,000 scholarship plus an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C.
2. Patriot’s Pen — Theme: “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans?” Eligibility: Students able to participate are in grades 6th-8th. Home-schooled students may participate.
Requirements For Students: Students must prepare an essay with the theme listed above. The essay must contain 300-400 words in English (No Graphics). All words count, even those with single letters. Essays must be typed. Your deadline for submitting your essay and entry form will be Nov. 1 to the post. Students are not required to read their essay. Winner: The first place national award winner of this contest will receive $5,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. with a parent or guardian.
3 Continuing Education Scholarship: Ladies Auxiliary members, her spouse, daughter or son are eligible to apply; 18 years or older. Complete application and submit a typed essay of 300 words or fewer and describe your commitments on your goals and how this scholarship will help you attain these goals. Deadline is Feb. 15, 2015.
4. Junior Girls Scholarship Contest: Members Junior Girls 13-16 yrs. who have been a member for at least one year having held an office. Students complete the specified application procedures. Previous national first-place winners may not reapply. Deadline is Mar. 11, 2015.
5. Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest: Students grades 9th-12th. Students submit their art on paper/ canvas. Digital art is not accepted. Deadline Mar. 31, 2015.
