Coming Signs of Summer: City Lake, DMV
Summer will be a season of completed city projects in Eunice, project that have long been delayed.
This summer will feature opening of a new location for the Eunice branch of the Department of Motor Vehicles office, a new location for the Eunice Food Bank and a new recreational destination.
Progress on the projects seemed to slow to a crawl at times, but completion of the Eunice City Lake upgrade and the new DMV location at the former Guillory Developmental Center is nearing.
Mayor Claud “Rusty” Moody said the projects that should have been completed “a long time ago” will come to fruition this summer.
Moody commented on the proposed work on the future site of the new DMV.
“Anytime you renovate an old building, you may have some problems that crop up,” said Moody.
“Well, we’ve had two problems. One has been addressed already, and that’s the roof. There were leaks in the roof and when they got into the work, they found that the roof was leaking around the vents.
“The other problem is that two air-conditioning units are both dead and need to be replaced. The problem with that is that the ACs are in a small room and in order to get to them, the contractor will have to tear down a wall.
“To tear down a wall, we have to wait on a ‘change order’ to come through (from the state) so that they can do that work. Right now, it’s in limbo.”
Moody is confident that the new DMV office will open and be operational before the end of summer.
He said that the relocation of the DMV will also free up the office space at the American Legion building – which will then become the new site of the Eunice Food Bank as it moves from Northwest Community Center.
In regards to the Eunice City Lake project, Moody said that it will be completed and opened “before the 4th of July.” He said that the final walk-through of the project was supposed to take place on Wednesday but has to be rescheduled.
The mayor said that the city is waiting on an order of official, regulatory signs to be posted within the City Lake area.
“City Lake will be open very soon, we just have yet to determine when,” said Moody. “The fish are not that big, but most people will enjoy going out there to barbecue.”
