3 apply for Evangeline Parish superintendent

By Elizabeth West Ville Platte Gazette

The applications are in, and it looks like the Evangeline Parish School Board will have three individuals to choose from to become the district’s new Superintendent of Schools.
The board learned that they would need to begin advertising for the position after current superintendent Toni Hamlin announced at an August board meeting that she would be retiring when her contract ends on Dec. 31.
School Board President Wayne Dardeau said, “The deadline to apply for the position was October 28th, so on Friday we went and got all of the applications out of the mailbox that they have been locked in. We had a total of three applicants; one female and two males.”
The three applicants are the district’s current assistant superintendent Darwan Lazard, Dr. Sandra Reed from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, and Steve Benton Sr. from Marianna, Florida.
The board plans to interview all three candidates in the same night in a meeting that will be open to the public. When this meeting will be held is still undetermined, but the board hopes to hire the new superintendent at its Dec. 14 meeting.
Dardeau said a fourth application had been received. The application did not meet the qualifications to be considered for the position.
As for the three candidates whose applications were received on time, all of their applications have been reviewed.
Dardeau said, “All of the applications have been looked over and all three applicants meet the requirements to be superintendent.”

During the meeting, Hamlin also shared news for parents and students in Evangeline Parish concerning meals.
Hamlin said, “For this school year, beginning on November 1st, students at all 12 schools in the district will receive free lunch.”
The superintendent did however clarify that parents will still have to pay for their child’s meals for the month of October if your child was at a school that previously did not receive free lunch.
Next school year the schools will be re-evaluated, which could cause this to change. But, for the rest of the 2016-2017 school year every student will eat for free.
