Alderman resurfaces road issue

By Harlan Kirgan Editor

A meeting to set the agenda for Tuesday’s Board of Alderman’s meeting resulted in a critical assessment of the condition of state roads resurfacing.
Jack Burson, alderman at-large, said, “I”m going to bring up for the ninth time a resolution requesting the Louisiana state department of highways to do something to repair the state highways that pass through our town that are absolutely in the worst shape.”
Burson said he is 77 years old and the state roads are in the worst shape ever.
“Yesterday on Maple, I almost broke my right front wheel on my car. Somebody is going to get hurt in a bad accident,” he said.
“I want to send a copy to the state representative and the state senators who seem to be involved with all kinds of social issues in the Legislature, but can’t apparently tend to their number one responsibility, which is taking care what we’ve already got,” he said.
Burson said the worst of the road problems are on Maple Avenue from the turn to Crowley on La. 13 to Bobcat Drive and on U.S. 190.
“If they are going to represent us I think it behooves them to pick up the phone and call the department head in Lafayette in the district over here and get him to send us some hole-fillers over here,” Burson said.
Burson said city crews cannot fill the potholes because they are on state highways.
Mayor Scott Fontenot suggested the resolution be hand-delivered to the highway department and legislators.
Burson is to introduce the resolution at the meeting scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the council chambers in the Eunice Municipal Complex, 300 S. 2nd St.
Other items on the agenda include:
— Announcement of a special meeting on the city budget at 10 a.m. June 28.
