Chance of wintry mix to build overnight
Today’s dry cold over the Eunice area will give way overnight to a chance of rain, freezing rain and/or sleet.
The National Weather Service says there is a 30 to 40 percent chance that the wintry mix will occur in the area between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Friday, with only a trace ice accumulation.
A bit to the west and north, the forecast is for the same probability of a little more accumulation, up to .05 of an inch.
Bitter cold this morning will linger through the day as a persistent wind cuts batters exposed surfaces, driving wind chills way below freezing.
This morning’s low just after 6 a.m. in Eunice was 21, with the “feels like” number set at 12.
By 8 a.m. the mercury had climbed to 23 and the wind chill had risen to 14.
The expected high today is in the 35-40 range, with lows tonight in the upper 20s. Actually the overnight low will likely be before midnight, the NWS says, as a chance for wet wintry mix builds, a chance that could occur again early Saturday, according to forecasters.
Saturday's high should reach near 50. Forecasters said it remains possible that winter precipitation could be an issue early Sunday.
Thursday morning’s low compares to the 19 mark registered on the same date last year.
The record low for January in Eunice is 17, posted on Jan. 30-31 last year and in 1984.
The area, as the temperatures noted above indicate, experienced two winter storm systems in January of 2014.
The average high in January is 62 and the average low is 43.
