Couple escapes night fire on Park Avenue

Charlie and Charlene Montz of Eunice escaped uninjured as a fire consumed their West Park Avenue home early Sunday.
Montz, a retired Postal Service mail carrier who now has a lawn care business and has been a high school sports officials for years, said he heard a loud noise at approximately 3:30 a.m. Sunday and walked toward the sound. He added, “I then saw smoke coming from the kitchen and when I looked closer I saw flames coming from under my car garage. Charlene and I exited from our back door, and I called 9-1-1 right away.
The 1955 homestead has been the Montz’ home since 1989.
“I am thankful and grateful that we survived. And I am thankful that to many great friends and family who helped out right away. One friend in particular approached me.. and now we are residing temporarily in one of his rent homes.”
Montz also would like to “commend” the Eunice Fire Department firefighters on their prompt arrival, “I think within 2 minutes they were here.”
Montz says that the State Fire Marshal’s report and all particulars are currently being done.
