Two new politicians and one incumbent politician thanked local constituents at Wednesday’s Rotary meeting.
Jimmie Edwards, St. Landry Parish District 12 parish council member, said, “My plan is to continue what we are doing — repair roads and build more roads with the Smooth Ride Home program. I drove a school bus for 25 years, and there are lots of bumpy roads.”
He added, “Thank you for passing that 2-cent tax for the roads. Hopefully in the future we can do some more (roads).”
Edwards, who was the first to speak at the meeting, retained his council seat after defeating Kenneth Janice, John Marshall and Imelda Allison Thomas.
New politician Colby Clavier defeated incumbent Gary D. Courville for the St. Landry Parish District 13 parish council member seat
“It’s been fun so far,” Clavier said. “What I felt helped me in the election was knocking on doors in my district. I knocked on several hundred doors. I am honored to be here today, and I look forward to working with Jimmie and the council.”
Like Edwards, Clavier would also like to keep improving the parish’s roadways, and he would also like to better drainage in the area.
“I am eager and willing to get things done in our district.”
Phillip DeVillier defeated Greg Fruge and Germaine Simpson to fill the seat of termed-limited District 41 state representative Mickey Guillory. DeVillier said protecting LSUE is at the top of his list of priorities.
“LSUE is a real blessing to this district,” DeVillier said. “Monday morning I called the capitol to set up a meeting with the House to get to know the staff. I talked to them about what to do with the budget. I asked who will take care of LSUE, and I couldn’t get a solid answer.”
DeVillier said he plans to meet with the LSUE chancellor, host town hall meetings throughout the district, focus on infrastructure and have an open door policy.
