Eunice driver, unbelted, dies in head-on with 18-wheeler
Shortly after 7 a.m. Thursday, troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash on LA 13 north of LA 365 in Acadia Parish. The crash took the life of 36-year-old Eric Bischoff of Eunice.
Troopers’ investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Bischoff was driving a 2007 Nissan Titan north on LA Highway 13. A 2003 Freightliner pulling a box trailer, driven by 56-year-old Gerald Fields of Eunice, was traveling south on LA Highway 13.
For reasons still under investigation, Bischoff partially crossed he centerline and struck the Freightliner’s front left side.
Bischoff and Fields were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Bischoff was pronounced dead at the scene by the Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office. Fields was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
