Eunice attorney and city alderman Jack Burson was the first of many speakers at a Senate Environmental Quality Committee hearing in Lafayette. Burson spoke against the Cleco-Calpine power plant citing its water usage. Nearly 300 people attended the hearing.
Eunice High School vocational teacher Vera Booth-Matt was named teacher of the year at the state level by the Louisiana Association of Family and Consumer Science.
A computer kiosk from LSUE was installed at Eunice High School to allow high school students access to the college’s library databases among other searches. Shown in a photo with kiosk were Johnny Bourque, principal; Betty Fay Miller, librarian; William Nunez, LSUE chancellor; and Ron Wright, LSUE director of information technology.
Kimberly LeJeune, daughter of Tyrell and Earlene LeJeune of Eunice, received the Ariat Achiever Award at the Louisiana High School State Finals Rodeo.
The St. Landry Parish Police Jury created a citizen’s committee to study various forms of government for the parish. Attending a meeting in Opelousas were Eunice area representatives Jack Burson, District 11; Glen Mentel, District 12; and Jerry Devillier, District 13. Parish voters would eventually approve a home rule charter government.
