First Baptist Church celebrated its 50th anniversary during an all-day program at the church. A highlight was organization of the new Emmanuel Baptist Church at Walnut and 11th streets, with letters of dismissal given 60 members who are organizing that congregation.

Principal Jonas Mason announced the faculty for Charles Drew High and said classes will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

The City Council opened bids for a new sewerage disposal plant. It will cost about $425,000 and lines leading to it will cost a bout $1.3 million. The plant will serve a city of 17,000, engineers say. Lift stations will be built at 12th & Laurel and South Duson & Laurel.

Dr. Raymond Landreneau has joined the staff of Mamou’s Savoy Hospital. He will practice there until called into military service.

J. Nilas Young has announced he will be a candidate for Eunice city judge. He has practiced law seven years.

Karen Jane Veillon, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Veillon, was named Miss Eunice. She is a freshman at Newcomb College.

Fred Bellow opened his new Home Furniture and Appliance store at West Laurel and 11th.

St. Edmund cheerleaders this fall are Georgia McGee, Jackie Easton, LuLu Sabatier, Janice LaHaye, Gilda Ardoin, Jeanine Morton and Katherine McLane.

Lynn Nunley is student body president at Eunice High. Senior class president is Ronnie Harris.

Winston “Skeet” Attebury, who owns a rice and cattle farm seven miles south of Eunice on La. 13, is Acadia Parish Farmer of the Year. He is also a licensed civil engineer and former School Board member.
