Scherri N. Guidry is a candidate for judge in the 27th Judicial District Court, Division B in the Nov. 4 primary.
She is a native of Opelousas, and graduate of Lawtell High School. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree with a major in Political Science from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette (then University of Southwestern Louisiana) in 1995 and received her Juris Doctorate degree from the Southern University Law Center / Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1999.
Guidry currently serves as a Senior Misdemeanor Attorney with the 15th Judicial District Public Defenders office in Lafayette, handling a full range of criminal cases.
The candidate has previously served as staff attorney for Legal Services of North Louisiana, Inc. in Monroe, handling a wide variety of civil cases; including but not limited to family law, consumer law, employment related issues, landlord-tenant disputes, contract disputes, and issues involving elderly residents.
She was selected to serve on the Family Law, Elder Law, and Consumer Law Task Forces; all tasked with the mission of reviewing appropriate laws and statutes and making recommendations for changes where necessary; and insuring the most appropriate use of resources and delivery of services to qualified residents.
Guillory also previously had a private law practice in Opelousas, handling a full range of criminal, civil, and domestic cases.
Prior to that, she served as a counselor and mentor in the Upward Bound program at UL-Lafayette, an academic enrichment program which prepares first-generation students and students from economically disadvantaged families for the academic and social challenges of college. She I worked with students from various cultures and socio-economic backgrounds from various schools, including Northwest High School.
The candidate is a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association (Committee on Diversity within the profession), Louis A. Martinet Legal Society, Lafayette Parish Bar Association, and National Association of Public Defense Attorneys. She is also licensed to practice before the U.S. District Court-Western District of Louisiana.
She is a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Lawtell, Louisiana.
