Leaders here, elsewhere, pledge to work against litter
The Eunice City Council has proclaimed Friday, March 13 as Leaders Against Litter Day in the city.
Leaders throughout the Eunice area are joining Keep Eunice Beautiful to participate in the second annual Leaders Against Litter event on that date.
Keep Eunice Beautiful is one of 23 Keep Louisiana Beautiful affiliate communities across the state selected to host this statewide “litter-thon.
Keep Louisiana Beautiful and Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne have invited hundreds of local elected officials, stakeholders, community leaders, school and church leaders and potential supporters to participate in the Leaders Against Litter event conducted in 22 cities throughout the state.
On March 13 affiliates will simultaneously conduct a litter cleanup with the help of volunteer community leaders. The goal is to shed some light on the litter problem in Louisiana and to engage leaders in the state and local effort to make Louisiana litter-free.
Leaders Against Litter is set to begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Eunice City Hall lobby. The group will travel a designated route collecting litter using golden grabbers and wearing gold Leaders Aginst Litter T-shirts.
Following the cleanup, the leaders will be asked to sign a pledge to speak up and spread the word that litter is not acceptable, to pick up litter whenever they see it, and to stand up and lead the way for a litter-free Louisiana.
Later that day, Lt. Gov. Dardenne, Keep Louisiana Beautiful an Volunteer Louisiana will announce the statewide results, along with the number of pledges signed and bas of trash picked up, at a 2 p.m. press conference at the State Capitol.
The general public is encouraged to follow the example of the leaders in the Eunice area and participate in the Great American Cleanup/Eunice High Trash-A-Thon on Feb. 28.
Persons interested in helping in either event should contact KEB chairwoman Donna Baltakis by Feb. 24.
She can be reached at baltakisd@bellsouth.net or at 457-1510.
