The Catholic Church’s past issues with scandals came up in the Louisiana State Senate chamber Monday as the body debated a House bill that would add rape of minors to the sex crimes that can be prosecuted up to 30 years after they are committed.
Currently, Individuals have a 30-year window to bring up criminal charges against an adult who sexually molest or abuse, human trafficking, involve in pornography or prostitution of those under the age of 18.  Under House Bill 210, first- and second-degree rape are added to the offenses that can be prosecuted three decades later.
The Senate unanimously passed the measure originally authored by Rep. Patrick Connick, R-Morrero, and sent it to Gov. John Bel Edward.
Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, D-New Orleans, who keeps a bobble head of Pope Francis on her chamber desk, told lawmakers that as a Catholic she believes people in positions of authority should be held accountable for ruining a child’s life.
“This is not an attack on the Catholic Church,” said Claitor, who sponsored the bill in the Senate. “This is an attack on sexual predators.”
