Selling fetal body parts and organs may become illegal

By Justin DiCharia Manship School News Service

Selling aborted fetal body parts and organs may become a felony in Louisiana pending passage of the proposed law in the House and the governor’s signature.
Planned Parenthood was the center of the author’s focus during committee debate Tuesday. The national organization has denied that it engages in the practice of selling fetal parts and has sued a video producer over accusations to the contrary.
Sen. Ryan Gatti, R-Bossier City, pushed his Senate Bill 33 before the House Health and Welfare Committee, citing a campaign promise as his motivation for bringing up the bill, which would also include Federal Express or UPS drivers who transport aborted fetal parts as liable for prosecution.
“I promised to make what Planned Parenthood does a crime,” Gatti said. “I spent a lot of time studying every noun, verb and adjective that [the abortion] industry uses so there was no confusion.”
The legislation would have a minimum 10-year and a maximum 50-year sentence for the harvesting, collection, sale, or transportation of aborted fetal organs or body parts. Along with the prison sentence, the state would issue a $50,000 fine for each violation of the law.
When asked after he left the committee whether he intended to jail an express delivery driver who delivers the parts, Gatti said it was.
It is expected to receive certain approval in the House chamber.  Gov. John Bel Edwards is on record as being anti-abortion.
