She'll bike 63 miles to honor mentor, raise funds for scholarship

Kathleen Warner: Ready for the road.

Kathleen Warner wants to honor the late Ed Calloway, who was first her instructor at LSU Eunice and then her co-worker as she joined the Respiratory Care Program, ultimately becoming its director.
And she’s doing it in a unique way -- seeking scholarship fund pledges for a cross-country bike ride.
Warner, whose been a cyclist for about 15 years, will ride from the campus to Kinder and back, a round-trip journey of 63 miles, on July 20 to fulfill her pledge.
Meanwhile, more than 200 persons or businesses have made their pledges, totaling about $10,200 as of Wednesday, through a crowd-funding website.
The initial goal was $5,500.
“The response is truly a reflection of the kind of person and teacher he was,” Warner said in discussing Calloway and the fund-raiser’s success.
The esteem in which he was held is evident in the blog remarks by some of those who have contributed.
“People who knew Ed are the ones who are making this happen,” she said.
Warner is confident the 63 miles will be completed. She’s done it twice in recent weeks, and taking off for a 30-mile jaunt around the Cajun prairie is nothing at all for her.
“I do leisure rides of 30 to 35 miles,” she noted.
July 20 is no random date selection for the ride. It is part of rides being done around the world by thousands of women for Rapha 100 km events.
