Eunice earns split in season finale

CHURCH POINT – The Eunice High Bobcats ended their season here Friday night by taking a 59-39 District 5-3A victory over the Church Point High Bears.

The win gave Coach John McLemore’s Bobcats a winning season with a 13-12 record.

The win also earned the Bobcats a 6-4 finish in district play, good enough to finish in a three-way tie for second with Northwest and Port Barre.

Against the Bears, the Bobcats jumped to an 8-0 lead on two 3-point field goals by Ben Allison and a short jumper in the lane by Derek Denton. Allison’s 3-point goal from the corner as the first quarter ended put the Bobcat on top 17-6.

The Bobcats outscored the Bears 14-8 in the second quarter to enjoy a 31-14 lead at the half. The Bobcats’ half-court pressure defense forced a flood of turnovers by the Bears in the first half.

The Cats continued their dominance in the second half, outscoring the Bears by a 16-11 margin in the third quarter. Coach McLemore would clear his bench in the second half as the Cats maintained total control of the contest.

Joseph Garrett finished as the leading scorer for Church Point with 17 points. He seven field goals, including two from beyond the three-point arc.

Allison led the Bobcats in scoring with 21 points, including five field goals from outside the 3-point line.

Denton and Trennon Trosclair also hit the double-figure mark with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Shon Edwards added eight points for the Cats.

CPHS 51, EHS 23

The Church Point High Lady Bears blew past the Eunice High Lady Bobcats early in the game on their way to a 51-23 victory Friday night in District 5-3A action here at the Bears’ gym.

The Lady Bears used pressure defense to shutout the Lady Cats in the first quarter to build a 17-0 lead.

The Lady Bobcats, who finished 7-14 for the season and 3-7 in district play, tried to pull back into the game with a 9-4 run early in the second quarter, but the Lady Bears scored the final eight points of the quarter to hold a 29-9 lead at the half.

The Lady Bears (14-11, 6-4), who will likely make the state playoffs, would allow the Lady Cats to score just 14 points in the second half.

The Lady Bears scored 22 in the final two quarters.

Mary Citizen led Church Point in scoring with 13 points. Alexis Ray added nine points for the Lady Bears.

Senior Abby Hillman led the scoring for the Lady Bobcats with seven points.

Hali Jack added six for the Lady Cats.

At the free throw line, the Lady Cats converted just two of nine attempts.

The Bobcat gym will be the site of a district playoff game between the Rayne and Northwest girls on Monday night.
