Silver Star holder, two-war vet
LAFAYETTE – Services for decorated Col. Ray Stroup, US Army retired, will be Friday. He died May 11 at age 96.
He was a veteran of World War II (European theater) and the Korean War. He held the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. After retiring, he worked in the financial industry with Wells Fargo.
Survivors include a son and a daughter.
Arrangements are by Fountain Memorial.
Former Pardon Board member, GSU gridder
BATON ROUGE – Services for retired educator and former member of the Louisiana Pardon Board Paul Duell will be Friday. He died May 10 at age 82.
He played football at Grambling State University, then was a principal and teacher in Rapides Parish and was also with Public Investors Insurance Co. He was appointed to the pardon board and the Louisiana Insurance Rating Commission by Gov. David Treen and was former Director of Veterans Education in Louisiana.
Survivors include his wife Norma and three daughters.
Saints Hall of Fame member
NEW ORLEANS – Services are pending for former New Orleans Saints running back and member of the teams Hall of Fame Chuck Muncie. He died May 13 at age 60.
He played college football at the University of California and was the Saints draft pick third overall in the 1976 NFL player selection after finishing second in the Heisman Trophy voting to Archie Griffin. In 1979, Muncie rushed for more than 1,000 yards and was the Pro Bowl MVP. He was traded to San Diego in 1980 and later served 18 months in prison on a cocaine conviction.
Mental health medical director
NEW ORLEANS – Services for mental health center medical director Dr. David Mitchell will be Thursday. He died May 11 at age 84.
After practicing general medicine several years, he returned to LSU and completed a residency in psychiatry. He practiced at West Jefferson Mental Health Center, retiring as its medical director.
Survivors include his wife Patricia, two sons and a daughter.
Arrangements are by Schoen Canal Street.
