Blue Jays soar past Gueydan
The St. Edmund Blue Jays broke a five-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 71-56 win over Gueydan.
“Winning this game was big for us,” St. Edmund head coach Hunter Dawkins said. “If we can continue to work our game plan, everything will fall into place.”
The first quarter opened with fireworks as the two teams combined for five three-pointers as the Blue Jays grabbed a 19-12 lead.
Christian McFarlain hit three treys for St. Edmund (4-9), while Bears (0-8) Colten Woods and Nick Boudreaux hit three pointers to keep the game close.
The Blue Jays went on an 8-0 run to open the second period, sparked by six points by John Ross Guillory.
A baseline jumper by McFarlain and a put-back by Dylan Bieber pushed St. Edmund ahead, 31-14.
The Bears ended the half with two free throws from Casin Reed and trey from Boudreaux to close the gap to 31-19 at the break.
McFarlain kept his long-range shooting going in the third period with two more treys to give the Blue Jays a 39-27 advantage at the 4:12 mark.
Gueydan rallied for a 9-0 run to close the gap to 39-36, sparked by eight points from Boudreaux.
St. Edmund’s Stone LeJeune drained back-to-back treys to push the Jays ahead, 45-38 as the game moved to the final period.
Five points from Cullen Brown combined with a baseline jumper by Kyle Verdugo increased the Blue Jays’s lead to 52-39.
McFarlain and LeJeune would hit treys and Brown scored in the lane as the Jays begin to pull away, 62-43 midway through the period.
Gueydan went on a 7-2 run, but the Blue Jays responded with six straight points including a baseline jumper from Quinton Swann and a three-point play from LeJeune.
Woods scored the Bears’ final six points to close the final gap to 15 points.
McFarlain led all scorers with 22 points, including six three-pointers.
LeJeune finished with 16 points including three treys.
Verdugo chipped in 10 points for the other Blue Jay to score in double figures.
Boudreaux led the Bears with 19 points, while Woods added 15 points.
St. Edmund opens District 5-1A play at home Friday night against Catholic of Pointe Coupee.

The cold weather invaded the St. Edmund gym as the Lady Jays struggled to score against Gueydan, falling 47-26 Tuesday night.
The Lady Jays made just 12-of-45 shots and hit just 2-of-10 free throws in the loss.
St. Edmund (2-12) battled early to keep the game close, as Maddie Andrus, Constance Fontenot and Margaret Vidrine gave the Lady Jays a 6-4 lead midway through the period.
Gueydan tied the game on a base line shot by Trina Leger, but Lady Jay Payton Crowell answered with a jumper to take back the lead.
The Honey Bears then went on a 5-0 run, aided by a trey from Ashari Terry to grab as 12-8 advantage as the game moved to the second quarter.
Leger scored on a put-back and Cheyenne LaComb hit a trey to give Gueydan a 17-9 advantage.
Free throws from Vidrine and Andrus combined with a jumper by Kelli Richard closed the margin to seven points late in the period but Gueydan closed the half with a 3-0 run gave the Honey Bears a 22-12 lead at intermission.
Gueydan put the game away with a strong third-quarter surge, roaring on a 17-2 run.
Andrus scored the only Lady Jay points with a jumper at the 5:51 mark.
Gueydan continued its dominance with a 6-0 run to begin the final quarter before Andrus scored again with 6:00 left in the game.
Gueydan’s Emily Gaspard scored on a lay-up to extend their lead to 47-16 and the final Honey Bear points of the game.
St. Edmund finished the game with a flourish, going on a 10-0 run.
Sydney Thibodeaux scored off a steal, while Andrus scored on back-to-back drives in the lane.
Vidrine closed the surge with two final buckets to close the gap to 47-26.
Andrus led the Lady Jays with 11 points, while Boudreaux and Leger each scored 10 points for Gueydan.
