Bobcats fall to Rayne

The Rayne High Wolves continued their dominance of District 4-4A Tuesday night at the Eunice High gym with a 37-28 victory over the Eunice High Lady Bobcats
The victory gave Rayne High an 11-0 record in district play, with a game remaining against Crowley. That record ensures that the Lady Wolves will capture the district title. Overall the Lady Wolves sport a record of 21-6.
Coach Durell Peloquin’s Lady Cats fell to 14-9 overall and to 5-6 in district play with the loss.
The Lady Bobcats will wrap up their regular season by hosting a makeup game tonight against Crowley High School.
At No. 21 in the LHSAA power rankings, the Lady Cats are still in contention to host a state playoff game.
Against Rayne, the Lady Cats held their own in the opening quarter, trailing by a 7-6 margin after the first eight minutes of the contest. A free throw by Logan Ledoux tied the game at the 7:39 mark of the second quarter, but Rayne quickly regained the momentum to go up 12-7 thanks to a field goal and a free throw by Chariesha Dugas.
Eunice’s Dashaya Vigers used an old-fashioned three-point play to cut the lead to 12-10, but the Lady Wolves trapping defense forced the Lady Cats to commit several turnovers in the final five minutes of the half to extend Rayne’s lead to 24-10 with just under two minutes left in the half. Two free throws by Vigers were the only points for the Lady Cats over the final 5:59 of the half as Rayne surged to a 28-12 halftime lead.
The Lady Cats cut the Rayne lead to 30-17 thanks to a 3-point field goal by Hali Jack late in the third quarter, but Rayne still held a 33-17 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Eunice girls made run in the fourth quarter in an attempt to get back in the game, outscoring the Lady Wolves 9-2 over the first five minutes of the quarter to cut the lead to 35-26. Jack hit a 3-point goal, Beulah Bradley had a steal and driving goal, and Vigers added a field goal and two free throws to spark the comeback attempt.
But the Lady Cats could get no closer, with each team scoring two points over the final three minutes to make the final score 37-28 .
Vigers led the Lady Cats in scoring with 17 points. Jack added eight, with Bradley ending with two and Ledoux with one.
Dugas topped the scoring for Rayne with 23 points. Tori Carrierre and Whitley Larry chipped in with five apiece for the Lady Wolves.

RHS 36, Eunice 30
The Rayne High Wolves held off a second half rally by the Eunice High Bobcats to claim a 36-30 District 4-4A victory here Tuesday night at the Bobcat gym.
Coach Chad Andrepont’s Bobcats (7-19) fought back from a 19-13 halftime deficit to trail by a 25-24 margin at the end of the third quarter.
The Cats tied the score at 26-26 during the first minute of the fourth quarter on a Paul Hebert drive to the basket, then took the lead on a driving layup by Jerwaski Thomas at the 5:16 mark for a 28-26 lead.
Seconds later, Rayne erased the Bobcats’ lead with a 3-point field goal, but a tip-in by Thomas put the Cats back in the lead at 30-29 with 3:04 left in the game. A free throw by Rayne tied the game at 30-30 with 2:43 left in the game, but Byron Mouton’s 3-point field goal with just over one minute to play gave the Wolves the lead for good at 33-30. Rayne scored three more points to account for the final score.
Larry topped the Rayne scoring with 15 points. Broussard added eight and Mouton had five.
Thomas led the Bobcats in scoring with 16 points. Hebert added nine for the Cats.
The Bobcats will complete their season with two games next week. The Cats travel to Crowley on Tuesday and host Beau Chene on Friday, February 21 to finish the season.
