Teen trio held in Bertman home invasion, theft
Three teenagers are charged with the targeted invasion of former LSU baseball coach and athletic director Skip Bertman’s home.
Moises Marques, 18, of Baton Rouge and two 16-year-olds are charged with simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling, police said.
Marques was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish prison, while the two juveniles were booked into a juvenile detention center in the Baton Rouge area.
Bertman, 75, was awakened by burglars shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday. He struggled briefly with them before they fled. Neither he nor his wife Sandy were injured during the invasion.
The alleged burglars stole stole some of Bertman’s championship rings won while he was LSU’s coach from 1984 through 2001. The estimated value of the rings is about $8,000, police said. Bertman won five national championships at LSU between 1991 and 2000 and won seven Southeastern Conference titles during his tenure.
Bertman lost most of his collection of memorabilia earned throughout his career during a fire at the same home on Ormond Avenue near LSU in 2004. The Bertmans moved back into the home after it was rebuilt following the fire.
After retiring as baseball coach following the 2001 season, Bertman was LSU’s athletic director from 2001 through 2008.
