Man pleads to killing bear, gets 60 days, suspended hunting rights

A Monterey man who shot an old black bear with a cross-bow, then dragged it away and burned it will spend 60 days in jail and pa a $10,000 civil restitution fee.
Duell Moreland, 24, pleaded guilty to killing the 14-year-old female bear near a camp at Wildsville in November.
The lifetime hunting license he had previously purchased was suspended for five years by Judge Kathy Johnson, who could have suspended the license for life and given the bear killer 120 days in jail.
After killing the bear, Moreland dragged it through the woods and eventually set up a pile of wood and covered the animal’s body with gasoline before setting it on fire.
Agents began looking for the bear after a motality signal was received from its radio collar.
The signal is emitted after a certain amount of inactivity.
The collar and the bear’s remains were found at the burnpile.
