Kid too close to tracks struck by UP train
The Eunice Police Department received a call from Union Pacific Railroad late Friday night stating that an east-bound train had just struck a pedestrian.
Officers were directed to the area between N 5th to N 2nd Streets. The conductor provided a description of a male wearing a green-hooded sweat shirt and long shorts with a bike. Several officers searched the area along the tracks attempting to locate a victim. No victim was found after searching for over two hours. Officers then obtained the train information before they left the area.
Shortly after midnight officers learned that someone was transported to the AMC emergency room by private vehicle suffering from injuries. The victim was then transported to Opelousas General Hospital. Officer then went to Opelousas General as part of the ongoing investigation and learned that the victim was a juvenile male teenager.
Officers learned that the victim was standing near the railroad tracks as the train was approaching and was struck. The juvenile did sustain injuries but was able to get up and retrieve his bike then walk away before officers arrived. A citizen then gave the juvenile a ride home and his parent brought him to the hospital for treatment of his injuries. The investigation is ongoing into this incident.
