Trial under way in interstate multiple deaths case
The vehicular homicide trial of a Palmetto man accused in an Interstate 10 crash that killed a former Eunice resident, her three children and another woman is expected to resume Friday after an unexpected recess on Thursday.
David Leger faces five to 30 years in prison on each of five vehicular homicide counts if convicted.
Killed in the crash were Kimberly Stagg, 19, and Effie Fontenot, 29, both of Prairieville, and Fonenot's sons Austin, 3; Hunter, 7; and Keagan, 11.
Leger's co-defendant Kelsye Hall was convicted last year and sentenced to a two-year prison sentence. She was released this month and testified in Leger's trial Wednesday.
The two were engaged in a road-rage incident when the accident occurred, police assert.
Hall said Leger followed her for about 10 miles on the interstate, before trying to pass on the right shoulder, clipping her vehicle, crossing the median and hitting Fontenot's car head-on, causing it to explode.
