The State Banking Commission has denied an application to establish a homestead or building and loan association in Eunice. Associated with the enterprise are Ed Veillon, Lawrence Amy, Isom J. Guillory, Sr., O.A. LaHaye and Dr. Harry Jenkins.
Construction, at a cost of $10,000, to bring phone service to about 40 new subscribers on Richey Road is being completed by Southern Bell, according to local exchange manager Ivy Gashia.
Boys attending St. Edmund’s and Martel Memorial will be required to wear khaki uniforms this year for the first time. Black ties will be required, with white shirts worn on special days. Enrollment at the two schools is estimated to be about 400.
Four Eunice lads attended Pelican Boys State. They are Marion Fruge, Warren Young, Douglas McGee and Leopold Richard. Attending Girls State were Seraphia Deville, Shirley Chaumont, Gloria Jean Starks, Marquita Fuselier, Jo Lee Manuel and Bonnie Fontenot.
Cpl. Clement Thibodeaux, Jr. of Eunice, missing in action in Korea since Nov. 28, 1950, has been promoted to sergeant in the U.S. Army. The War Department told his father the son is still missing but that there is hope he will turn up in the exchange of prisoners during the truce period. He had been wounded in action in August 1950 and returned to the battlefield on Sept. 20.
LSU Coach Gaynell Tinsley and staff attended the first meeting of the Eunice Quarterback Club here,held at the outdoor kitchen of Warren “Block” Prudhomme.
Aldermen suggested at the City Council meeting that a special cell be set aside in the city jail for female prisoners.
Edna Bollich of Mowata received her white veil and habit in a religious ceremony at the Medial Mission Convent in Philadelphia, Pa.
Emma Stagg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Stagg, received the white veil of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word at San Antonio, Texas ceremonies. She took the name Sister Mary Elaine of St. Joseph.
City workers are raising East Maple Avenue by two feet so it will no longer be closed during and just after heavy rains. It will be graveled.
