A large crowd attended a meeting to discuss ways to keep Acadia Baptist Academy open. The Louisiana Baptist Convention is discussing possible closure of the school near Richard.
Two new firms are chartered to operate in Eunice. Dux Inc., Richard and Bertha LeDoux and Francis and Pearl LeDoux incorporators, sells, services and repairs appliances, power tools and related products. Hillcrest Realty, Newton Thibodeaux, Ferdie J. Brown, Sr. and R.P. Fontenot incorporators, is the other firm.
Hillcrest announced plans to develop a 25-acre tract south of Eunice High. It will accommodate 102 lots with minimum construction cost set at $15,000.
The Gournay heirs and Southwest Fidelity Corp. announced plans to develop 250 home sites on a 75-acre tract on LSUE Drive, also fronting on Maple Avenue.
According to Elson “Son” Fuselier, Southwest also plans to develop 136 lots on land purchased from Jimmy Fruge. It is across from Air King, faces 12th Street, and runs to Samuel Drive.
Developers Charles Aguillard, Jack Burson, Kearney Tate and Susa Veillon, are developing 39 lots in Acadian Place, off LSUE Drive near the university.
Newspaper publisher/editor Matt Vernon is new chairman of the Library Board. He succeeds District Attorney-elect Morgan Goudeau, III, chairman since the two-city library was established five years ago.
A state holiday of mourning was declared in the wake of the July 31 death of U.S. Sen. Allen J. Ellender, dean of the U.S. Senate.
St. Edmund High cheerleaders won blue ribbons and the spirit stick at Lamar University cheer camp. Attending were Renee Duplechin, Gwen Robbins, Annette Pucheu, Jeanie Miller, Mimi Montz, Cathy Wyble, Susie Lewis, Skye Shipley, Melany Landreneau and Rose Marie Sliman.
The Rev. Carlton N. Frank has announced his candidacy for the School Board. He has been a school teacher 17 years and a pastor for 22.
The city has accepted a federal Economic Development Grant of $64,800 to build a fire station at Ella & Faris streets on a site donated by the Amy family. The city will put up about $16,000.
Rouseb Soileau and Bruce Brown of Eunice were appointed by Gov. Edwin Edwards to the new rice promotion and research boards.
Neddrick Fruge of Eunice is among 126 students awarded Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees this month by Texas A&M. He is a Eunice High graduate and the son of Francis and Lucy Fruge.
Get that hair cut or you can’t play for the Eunice Bobcats, Coach Joe Nagata told boys turning out for the first summer football practice. He also reviewed a list of other rules that must be followed to play on his team.
Eight Eunice students received LSU degrees this month. They are David Frey and Sherryl Fontenot, undergraduates; and Mike Brinkman, Marie Demay, Sylvia Mayeux, Claud Moody, Jr., James Spell and Betty Bordelon, master’s degrees.
Debbie Courville, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Courville, was crowned Miss Eunice. She is a Eunice High graduate.
The city has received a $45,000 federal grant for developing a park at the corner of St. Mary and Athabaska streets.
The First United Methodist Church education building was dedicated in memory of the late Joe T. Hundley.
