Eunice High School seniors will perform community service projects

According to Eunice High School Principal Mitchell Fontenot, seniors at the high school will be performing community service projects again this year.
Fontenot said, “City of Eunice--it’s that time of year again when Eunice High School seniors will be going out into the community for their Senior Projects. They will be doing community service projects to give back to our community which has been so supportive of us in the past.
“Last year was the first year of implementing the projects at Eunice High School. It was an overwhelming success. Our students learned the importance of helping out their fellow man and gained an important understanding that each individual has a responsibility in their own community to make it better for everyone.
“Last year our students did the following community service projects:
Clothing drive for Welcome House
Decorating downtown and Park Ave. for Christmas
Canned goods pick-up for Eunice Food Bank
Blood Drive to benefit residents of Eunice by helping to pay medical expenses
Basketball Clinic for kids (admission price was 5 canned goods which were donated to food bank)
Painting with a Twist class for kids (free)
Volunteering at nursing home for two months ** several groups at different times of year
A dinner for the Elderly (held at a local church)
5K for St. Judes
Poboy sale to benefit St. Jude ** 5K and poboy sale were 2 separate events but raised almost $700.
Neighborhood clean-up
St. Louis Cemetery clean-up and beautification
Elder Helpers-helped the elderly do yard work in the Fall
Bake Sale – money donated to EHS Colorguard
Volunteering at the Welcome House – brought donations as well
Bake sale to benefit the Eunice Public Library
Free self-defense class for women
Put on a Valentine’s Day party and pageant at Eunice Manor nursing home
Joined in the Eunice Manor Christmas Party and brought gifts for residents
Free cheer and dance clinic for girls
Alzheimer’s Awareness Informational meeting and dinner (Adopted Alzheimer’s patients)
Coat drive for kids
Infant clothing and supply drive
Recycling project at Eunice schools
Bake sale at Ruby’s to benefit St. Judes patients from Eunice
Clothing Drive
Trash pick-up in Eunice (1 month)
Collecting and distributing Christmas gifts for patients
Free children’s fun day at neighborhood center
Collected hygiene products for homeless shelter
Christmas can good drive for Eunice Food Bank
Aiding the Chamber of Commerce (helped facilitate the Cook-off, repaired Chamber computers, helped set up annual meeting)
Planned and catered a brunch and honor ceremony to thank community leaders
Installed a corner flower garden and planted flowers in the courtyard of a local nursing home
Raised money with Hot Chocolate Sale, Garage Sale, and Silent Auction for Homeless Shelter
Homeless Shelter Holidays-
Thanksgiving: Entertained children with day of art projects
Christmas: Christmas for children at Shelter
Valentine’s Day: Brought children cupcakes, Valentine’s Day cards and Teddy bears
Easter: Held an Easter celebration for the children at the shelter that included pizza, Easter Baskets, a candy-filled piñata, and real old fashioned Easter egg coloring
Raised money with a bake sale and collected approximately 1,000 books for the Library
Read stories to children at the Public Library
Pressure washed and cleaned the Eunice Veteran’s Memorial
Fontenot added, “We look forward to working with the good citizens of Eunice again this year.
“Thanks for welcoming our students and giving them a sense of pride and accomplishment for their hard work. We, at Eunice High School, feel it is important to give back to our community that has supported us all these years.”
