Louisiana still ranks high in percentage of women killed by men
About two of every 100,000 Louisiana women were murdered by men in 2012 and almost all knew their attackers, putting the state in the top 10 of states, a report compiled by the Violence Policy Center shows.
It was the ninth time in 10 years that Louisiana ranked in the top 10. The report is based on data gathered by the FBI for its annual Supplementary Homicide Report.
Research conducted by the center shows the 45 Louisiana women killed by men that year — 1.92 deaths per 100,000 women — ranks the state's percentage the fourth worse in the nation behind Alaska, South Carolina and Oklahoma.
In Louisiana, almost all of the women killed in 2012 were murdered by men they knew, the study shows. About half were wives, live-in lovers, ex-wives or girlfriends of the killers.
