Cardiologist, military doctor
MONROE – Services will be Sept. 27 for cardiologist and retired brigadier general Dr. Ran Phillips, Jr. He died Sept. 24 at age 81.
He was a regular Army medical officer for 12 years, including chief of two departments at Fort Rucker, Ala. Army Hospital and chief of staff for the U.S. Army Hospital, Fort Carson, Colo. He served as division surgeon of the 101st Airborne and was a Vietnam War veteran. He held two Bronze Stars. He practiced internal medicine and cardiology in Monroe for 34 years. He served 10 years on the Risk Management Committee of the Louisiana Medical Mutual Insurance Co.
Survivors include his wife Janice.

3-war vet, LSU barber
BATON ROUGE – Services for LSU barber and three-war veteran Raymond “Big Papa” Vigil will be Sept. 27. He died Sept, 22 at age 89.
He was a U.S. veteran of World War II who held the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After he military career he became a barber at LSU, a job from which he retired.
Survivors include his wife “Mickey” and two children.
