Jays soar past WCA
BELLEVUE – The St. Edmund Blue Jays soared to a 44-0 win over Westminster Christian Academy to close their non-district schedule.
The Blue Jays (2-3) jumped out to a 24-0 first quarter lead and added 14 more points to hold a 38-0 advantage at the break.
“It is a real good deal when you can execute,” St. Edmund Thomas David said. “This was our best outing of the season, but we need to get better heading into district.”
St. Edmund opens District 5-A this week as the Blue Jays travel to Catholic High of Pointe Coupee.
St. Edmund moved the ball 60 yards in seven plays on the Jays’ second series, aided by a long pass from Drew Brown to Cullen Brown to move to WCA’s 15.
On fourth-and-four, Drown connected with Alex Hunt for an 11-yard touchdown.
Zach LaFleur caught the two-point conversion to push the Jays ahead, 8-0 with 7:05 left in the first period.
After forcing the Crusaders (0-5) to their second punt, the Blue Jays cruised 84 yards in just five plays.
A short pass by Brown and a long run by Alex Hunt moved the ball to fro the Jays’ 38 to the WCA 3.
Drew Brown scored on the next play and William Chachere caught the two-point conversion to push SEH ahead 16-0 with 2:34 left in the period.
Zach LaFleur recovered fumbled kickoff at the WCA 46 and it took just one play for Drew Brown to hit a wide-open Cullen Brown for a touchdown.
Hunt caught the two-point conversion as the Jays led 24-0 with 2:14 left in the first period.
WCA moved the ball to the St. Ed’s 36 before the Jays held on fourth down to stop the drive.
The Jays moved the ball 64 yards in six plays, aided by a crucial 36-yard catch by Cullen Brown.
On fourth-and-four at the WCA 13, Drew Brown found Aaron Sittig open for the score. Zach LaFleur caught the two-point conversion to give the Jays a 32-0 lead with 9:10 left before intermission.
Zach LaFleur later recovered another Crusader fumble near midfield.
Eight plays later, Drew Brown connected with Sittig for a 30-yard score.
The PAT failed, but the Blue Jays held a 38-0 advantage with 3:38 remaining in the half.
The Crusaders fumbled the second-half kickoff an the Blue Jays moved 37 yards in eight plays capped by a 5-yard run by Zach LaFleur.
The PAT failed but St. Edmund had a 44-0 lead with 9:07 left in the third period.
The Blue Jays stopped the Crusaders at the St. Ed 6 in the final minute of the third frame.
But the St. Edmund offense was stopped on fourth down at the WCA 14 with 3:24 left in the fourth quarter.
Three plays later, St. Edmund’s Hans Redlich recovered a Crusader fumble at the 18 to preserve the Blue Jay shutout.
Drew Brown completed 12-of-24 passes for 256 yards.
Cullen Brown caught three passes for 94 yards, while Hunt hauled three passes for 80 yards.
WCA was held to 111 yards of total offense, with 94 yards rushing on the night.
